Here are a few things to know before you go.

Pack for the Water

The Mediterranean is a big part of the Malta experience, so bring:

A swimsuit
Cover-up
Beach or water shoes
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Hat
Reusable water bottle
Small day bag
Quick-dry towel if your itinerary recommends bringing one

If your itinerary includes Gozo or a sailing day, you will definitely want your swimsuit and sun protection handy. The Vella itinerary, for example, includes both a full-day Gozo buggy experience and a private sailing day.

Don't Forget Comfortable Shoes

Malta is beautiful to explore on foot, but many of its most interesting areas were built centuries before smooth sidewalks were a consideration. Expect stone streets, steps, inclines and uneven walking surfaces.

Bring at least one pair of comfortable, broken-in walking shoes. You will appreciate them during days exploring Mdina, Valletta, the Three Cities and other historic areas.

Electrical Outlets & Charging Your Devices

Malta uses Type G electrical outlets, the same three-prong style used in the United Kingdom. Travelers coming from the United States will need a Type G plug adapter.

Most phones, tablets and laptop chargers are dual voltage, but check your individual device before plugging it in. Hair dryers, curling irons and other appliances may require more than a simple plug adapter if they are not dual voltage.

And don't forget chargers for your phone, watch, camera or portable battery pack.

Money & Credit Cards

The currency in Malta is the euro (€).

Credit cards are widely accepted, but it is still helpful to carry some euros for smaller purchases, markets, tips and places where cards may not be convenient.

Before traveling, check whether your credit card charges a foreign transaction fee and let your bank know you will be traveling internationally if required.

Stay Connected

Your phone will likely become one of your most useful travel tools. You'll use it for maps, photos, reservations and communicating with your guides.

Before leaving home:

Check your international cellular plan, or consider an international eSIM if your phone supports one.

Download WhatsApp, as it is commonly used for communication in Malta and may also be used by your drivers and guides.

Save important contact information from your Meet the Rock itinerary in your phone before arrival.

Hydrate, Especially on Touring Days:

Malta can be warm and sunny, particularly in the summer and early fall. Bring a reusable water bottle and make a point of drinking throughout the day.

The existing Meet the Rock guide notes that travelers should have water available while touring.

Leave a Little Room in Your Schedule

One of the best parts of experiencing Malta is having time to explore beyond the scheduled tours.

Your itinerary may include free days or evenings so you can enjoy a café, visit a beach, wander through a village, return to a favorite spot or simply slow down and enjoy the Mediterranean.

Don't feel as though every hour needs to be planned.

A Few Things Worth Packing

Passport and travel documents, medications, comfortable walking shoes, swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, Type G adapter, phone charger, portable battery, reusable water bottle and a small day bag will cover most of the essentials.

And one final suggestion: leave a little room in your suitcase. Malta has plenty of locally made products, foods and keepsakes you may want to bring home.
