Pronunciation

Maltese is a Semitic language that evolved from the Arabic language, with significant influences from Italian, Sicilian, and English. The Maltese alphabet is based on the Latin script. Here are some general guidelines for pronouncing Maltese sounds:

  1. Consonants:
    • ħ (ħa): Similar to the Arabic "ح" or the English "h" in "hat," but it is pronounced more strongly in Maltese.
    • g (gimel): Similar to the English "g" in "go" when it is not followed by "e" or "i." If it is followed by "e" or "i," it is pronounced like the English "j" in "jet."
    • għ (għajn): A unique sound found in Maltese, pronounced as a guttural, similar to the French "r" in "Paris" or the German "ch" in "Bach."
  2. Vowels:
    • a (aħmar): Similar to the English "a" in "father."
    • e (għerq): Similar to the English "e" in "let."
    • i (tiegħi): Similar to the English "ee" in "see."
    • o (qabar): Similar to the English "o" in "go."
    • u (kulħadd): Similar to the English "oo" in "food."
  3. Diphthongs:
    • ie (tieqa): Similar to the English "ye" in "yes."
    • ie (kien): Similar to the English "i" in "like."
    • ew (qiew): Similar to the English "ew" in "few."
  4. Double Consonants:
    • Double consonants are pronounced with a slight pause or emphasis, and they generally indicate a short preceding vowel.
  5. Stress:
    • Stress in Maltese typically falls on the first syllable.
